Maintaining National Sprinkler Models A-5, A5-2 & B-3

For best performance and longest life, the walking sprinkler should be oiled once a month on all moving joints and rotating bearing surfaces. Use any standard lubricating oil. Automotive water pump grease is the best type to use for the worm and worm gear assembly. This type of lubricant clings longer and is not affected by presence of water.

The drive worm should be lubricated with any automotive or industrial grease. Use a regular automotive type oil in the rear axle oil hole once every month (see Figure 1 for location of oil hole).

If using well water, be sure to install a hose washer with a filter screen to prevent sand from going through the sprinkler’s nozzles. If the brass spray nozzles at the end of each arm become obstructed with dirt or grit, they can be removed with the hex wrench, cleaned and reassembled.

Do not drop the sprinkler – this may cause damage.

Before storing the sprinkler away for the winter, completely drain the sprinkler by holding the front wheel up and allowing any water trapped inside to run out the rear hose. Water that freezes inside the sprinkler can cause serious damage.
